In the last two years the news has broadcasted reports of suicide linking to cases of school Bullying. Recently there has been three cases surrounding bullying. Phoebe Prince was a 15-year-old student at a school in South Jersey. Phoebe Prince was found hanging off of her house banister by her younger sister.
Phoebe Prince is said to be bullied to death by six of her classmates. Next, two 13-year-old boys also committed suicides do to school bullies contently calling them gay. The most recent accident was Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi. Tyler Clementi was tape during a sexual act with a male classmate.
Bullying seems to be a growing matter. With the recent suicides questions have been raised about criminalizing bullying. Should bullying be criminalized? What does the recent suicide have to say about parenting? Are parents raising their children too safely?
Although bullying seems to be growing matter, it is at an all time low. However, when a tragic event accurse the whole world hears about it do to media. 20 years ago if a heinous act was carried out in Florida, people in California would not be informed. Bullying to some extent is a problem. Nevertheless, bullying should not be criminalized. America is called the land of the free, although America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. This is not because Americans commits more crimes then other countries; America just has too many laws.
Criminalizing bullying would also backfire in the future. Sending a high school bully to prison with murderers and rapist does not match the crime (if there is a crime). If the system does criminalize bullying what will happen when the bully is released. Society will now house more uneducated citizens with a criminal record for a crime not worth the time. Bullying can be beneficial to some people.
America is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and I think everyone should go through some hardships to sympathize with the less fortunate and their ancestors. In the end bullying can make you stronger. Although, bullying can be beneficial to some it is still wrong.
Stopping bullying, school suicides, and school attacks starts in the student’s home. Sometimes we dislike people do to personal dislikes or characteristics. However, in most cases low self-esteem causes bullying. If or when parents promotes self-promotion, encourages self-esteem, and supports self-image will truly eliminate both bullying and school suicides.
